Bingo - here is your finance model!

When we were taking the last few sessions, Aisha and I shared our thoughts on the importance of having a finance model for the eco-club. That is very important aspect to become sustainable. The British Council - Global Changemakers Fund has agreed to provide a sponsorship of 1550 Swiss Frank to devise a finance model and yes! We did it.

Kulhudhuffushi has a business of State Trading Organisation called Isle Fresh that purchase from local farmers. In this model, eco-club members will grow plants on hydroponic system and sell the harvest to Isle Fresh. Yes! We are adopting a green finance model to generate revenue for the club. The revenue is all yours to spend on eco-club activities.

I have spoken to Aboobakuru from Hanimaadhoo, who will be providing the system for the school eco-club and will take 8-10 days workshop on hydrocluture and technical support for eco-club members. I suggest the eco-club to invite some of the fellow schoolmates; just to stir their interest and transform them into changemakers - just like you. I have also requested a local business in Male to deliver the nameboard for the project. It will come soon :)

Here is the package that will come with Hydroponic system.
  • This project is of cause a secondary project to the initiative of Maldivian Youth Climate Network. So we are working together on this.
  • Project Kaththiri (Kaththiti is a local word meaning 'a Y - Frame support') will not only give you a hydroponic system. Since hydroculture use chemicals and our aim is to become organic, we will integrate the composting activities of the club with this project and continue an organic farming initiative in the school grounds. We start small of cause.
  • There is one interesting thing. I have learned from my recent trip to Singapore's Sustainable Living Kampung  (managed by a great group of volunteers from Ground Up Initiative); a great innovative product called 'Garbage Enzymes'. It can be used for many purposes. From enriching the soils and keeping the pests away to cleaning plates, this product if made well, has huge benefits. Have a look on the links and we will try to do that as well. Sounds organic huh? :)
So three things; 1) Hydroponic system + workshop       2) Organic Farming; using composting + garbage enzymes    and     3) A good composting pit. I need your availability plan to set a time period.

Let me also tell you how pleased I am with your work. You all are doing a brilliant work and as I have spoken to your principle, I request our enthusiastic club coordinators to take the club activities to the rest of the school population. Maybe have it on noticeboard, promote the blog and definitely invite and involve other students in eco-club activities.

Gaby from Switzerland sends you her best wishes and all success. I, on the other hand, cannot wait to see you guys and get my hands dirty doing some composting.

Will be writing another piece for the blog very soon and do contact should you have a query.

PS: here is the official page of the Project in British Council Global Changemaker website. I haven't updated it yet, but it will be done soon.
